About
An independent publishing company based in Rolla, Missouri, publishing works in applied philosophy, intentional living, adult development, and longevity across four imprints.
Jim Zboran grew up in a house full of books. He has wanted to be a publisher since childhood — long before personal computers existed, long before desktop publishing made it possible for one person to bring a book into the world without an institution behind them. As a child he made his own: stapled-together papers, hand-illustrated, filled with whatever he was thinking about at the time. He got as far as soliciting printing quotes for perfect-bound books before the infrastructure caught up with the dream.
When desktop computing arrived in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the practical barrier dropped. But he didn't yet have what he wanted to say. He was still learning, still exploring, still working out what the ideas actually were. Over the following decades he was too occupied with the work of living and building to sit down with anything of substance. Along the way he helped others bring their own work into print and digital form. The publishing instinct stayed alive even when it wasn't his own name on the cover.
When the time came to step back from active practice and follow what he had been moving toward all along, he did not retire in the conventional sense. He became, formally and deliberately, an independent thinker and publisher. Jim Zboran Group is the realization of that childhood intention — arrived at late, built on a lifetime of preparation, and treated as a calling as much as a business.
The publishing part of what we do here is as much a passion as the books it produces.
The catalog spans four distinct territories, each with its own imprint:
Publishes works in Applied Philosophy of Human Systems — the foundational field that underlies everything else in the catalog. From the Collected Founding Papers for serious readers to accessible books for general audiences, Field & Frame is the intellectual anchor of the family.
Publishes the Timeline Surfing Collection and companion works — twelve standalone volumes on skilled, responsive participation in a life that reorganizes in response to that participation, plus supplemental works that extend the ecosystem.
Publishes works on longevity, adult development, and the renewal of growth across a full life — including the frames people hold about how long their lives are likely to be and what those frames produce in the present.
Publishes works on the individual in relation to the collective — specifically, the cultural frames and statistical norms that quietly organize individual lives, and the capacity to navigate from genuine intention rather than inherited orientation.
The territories are distinct. The underlying commitment is the same across all of them: a more accurate account of what is actually happening changes what becomes available. Nothing else is required.
JZG publishes one author: James Zboran. The imprint structure is not a publishing program open to submissions. It is an organizational framework for one sustained intellectual project, developed across distinct but related territories over decades of direct work with human systems.
The books do not prescribe. They do not diagnose. They do not offer steps, programs, or optimization protocols. They offer orientation — the kind that restores the reader's own capacity to see clearly and move from what they see. That restraint is not a limitation. It is the point.
Every title in the catalog, regardless of imprint, is built on the same foundational premise: most human difficulty is not a problem of motivation, character, or effort. It is a problem of orientation. And orientation, once restored, does not need to be told what to do next.
